If the domain of fiction film is the art of illusion, in documentary film it is the art of making present. And although every documentarian deals with the recording of the present differently, unlike fiction, no one escapes the creative and ethical question of how to deal with the presence of the documentarian? Especially if we delve into social spheres that pose various obstacles to this making present. It is not surprising that various authorial responses are always a source of passionate discussions in the social debate about the authenticity and credibility of the message or the responsibility of the documentarian.
As part of the masterclass, I would like to introduce to the audience (and together with them, problematize) the approach that I use in my documentary work and thoroughly analyze all sorts of pitfalls of documentary presence.
Tomáš Hlaváček (1988) is dedicated to socially critical, mainly time-lapse authorial documentary. He studied philosophy and media studies at Masaryk University, then documentary filmmaking at FAMU. He is the author of a documentary diptych analyzing the manifestations of the housing crisis in the Czech Republic – Dům bez východu (2024), awarded the main prize of the Czech Joy at the Jihlava IDFF, and Bydlet proti všem (2021). He also filmed an ethnographic probe into the football subculture Stadion (2019),
the documentary Jsme epicentra zemětřešení (2020) or Když máš práci, máš všechno (2016). As a documentarian, he focuses on the critical capture of current political and social topics, participating in the environment of ethnic minorities and social subcultures.

The Host Masterclass is conceived as a series of lectures in which prominent figures of cultural life talk about their profession and life. The event is created with the financial support of the State Fund of Culture.
Admission 200 CZK / student 100 CZK.
